On June 5, 2012, in Android, Experience, Tech off, by Aritra Sen

My last post about Android was How to root HTC Wildfire 2.2.1 and Install Cyanogenmod and I am so happy to see the response for this post.Glad to see that so many people have successfully rooted wildfire and now enjoying the power of Cyanogenmod using the guide.

Recently few of my friends started using Android phone and I believe this post would help them to gather information about useful Android apps and to get the most out of Android.

So I am sharing couple Android I use daily and productively(I am not including the pre installed applications that comes with stock rom and custom rom applications). Direct download links(From Google Play) are provided with Application name.

1. Advance Task Killer and Smart RAM Booster :  Though Android is working on improving the battery life with newer versions of Android OS but till 2.3 lesser battery life is an worry. These two apps can improve your phone’s battery life significantly with it’s background task killing capabilities. You need to enable automatic task killing in settings like for Advance task killer – set the auto killing frequency to  ‘when screen off ‘. Smart RAM Booster helps to speed up your phone, Do enable Auto Boost in the application settings.

2.1 click clear: Helps you to clear the Cache memory to speed up the phone operations and also cleans up the Residual files from SD card.

3.QuickPic: If your phone’s default photo viewer or gallery operations are taking huge time then use this application for faster photo browsing.

4. Camera 360: My phone doesn’t support Instagram photo sharing app , So I was  searching for a different photo enhancing and photo sharing application and I got this amazing camera app. Click the photo from this applications and then enhance the quality with different effects available(I love LOMO and RANDOM effects).

P.S: If your phone supports Instagram then use it.

5.TouchPal Contacts: You can easily replace your phone’s default dialer with this applications for Fast contact search and also shows the registered location of phone number/operator name when someone calls you.

6. MightyText: Easily one of my most favorite Android application(helps me to tackle with my laziness while browsing :-p) .After installing this application in phone, install the chrome add in in your computer.Helps to receive and send sms from my chorme browser while I am browsing in my computer. This app also gives you call alerts right into your browser.

7. DoubleTwistPlayer and Mx Player : DoubleTwist is good alternative for your default music player and Mx Player plays almost all the video formats with the extra add ons.

8. WhatsApp: Well you can only get addicted to this application after you use.Becoming the most famous and easiest mode of text communication, from which you can also share contacts and other attachments.

It’s a new day

On April 3, 2010, in Aritra Sen, Denken, Experience, Life, by Aritra Sen

Yes writing a blog post after a long period and from a new place. This is my first blog post from the city of joy-Kolkata.Hope that I will get time or will be able to make more time for me to write blog posts.Yes it is all about managing your time schedule,I do believe that no person in this world is so busy that he/she can’t be regular in blogs or he/she can’t date or hangout with friends. Its all about your wish and your eagerness.

I have joined a company, its my first job, trying to settle down in a new place.I am missing my home,my birth place, the pleasant weather of Siliguri, my friends and those hang outs with them in YMA,my all day long chatting and tweeting habits,my favorite TV shows and live cricket matches and the most I am badly missing my parents. But this is life you need to move on.Things which I am liking about me that I am getting along with new people very well which was lacking in me in last few years.I am lucky to have few friends here who hate to stay home in weekends :P .

Just came know this so true quote today

Those who have not yet accepted their own imperfections are the first ones to judge and criticize the faults of others.

Yes I am accepting my fault that I used to judge people too much that’s why I failed to get along with new people.Really my dear friend stop judging people, this life is too small to judge people near you.If you keep judging the person near you when you will gel with that person?so stop judging people and get along. You don’t have the rights to judge others and so do I.

Hope this “City Of Joy” has lot to offer me.I have only one life and I am trying to live it king size. :)

Thank you.

One of those days

On March 1, 2010, in Aritra Sen, Denken, Experience, India, Life, by Aritra Sen

Token of friendship

I am writing about yesterday and yes it was one of those when you fill touched, surprised, amazed by the fact a friend is there and that friend really remembered you and wished you in the auspicious occasion.Well I am not good with words and expressing my feelings as I am more a technical person (Girls reading this post don’t you worry I am a full on romantic person :P ) but jokes apart, yesterday it was Holi (the festival of colors here in India) I have not played it but a friend really made my Holi special by remembering me and also by a token of friendship.

Well a friend of mine used to say that someone is your true friend when you met that person after ages and then you both just get along and without dragging on the fact that why you both were not in contact/not blaming and asking the other person why you were not maintaining the contact by any means. To me a person gonna be you true friend if at your first met or in your first phone call with him/her you get along very easily and started playing pranks  without any hell lot of introductory speeches.

and who said that you can’t get good and real friends in virtual online world?2009(and also the starting of this year) was a year of getting very good friends for me .Came to know some(not much but yes few) amazing people through Twitter and Facebook and yes they are now my close friends in real life too.

If you read About me in this blog you will come to know I have very few friends and they always played a major role in my life.I know my good old friends are with me and but I also do hope that my few new friends which I got they would be also with me and they would get me whenever they need me.

Wishing you all Happy and Safe Holi.

Thanks for being my friend :)

Orkut vs Facebook

On January 22, 2010, in Experience, India, Tech off, by Aritra Sen

I had to put it like Orkut vs Facebook. It was about Orkut and Facebook but at last it turned into Orkut vs Facebook.Well this is coming from a series of discussion which took place in my facebook profile after I putted a status update as shown in the below image.

Facebook Status

After that It got 62 comments and amount of information about social networking came from those comments are immense. So I thought that I should not waste those information in facebook and I should blog it here.I am sharing that not to run down anybody who participated there in that healthy discussion. Now I am putting all the informative comments(skipping which are not that informative) one by one:-

Kuntal Gupta:1 Fact i know is that facebook and myspace were way before orkut.

Bibhas Ch Debnath: Actually FB launched 13 days after Orkut launched. So, I dont think it took the ideas from Orkut(it ‘s not possible for someone to build FB in 13days). Anyone thinking that is thinking crap. And I’d also really protest on the point that Orkut’s UI is better..

Aritra Sen:This is info- facebooks 1st named was facemash which was invented by mark zuckerberg on 28th oct 2003,then facebook named as thefacebook after that the final name is facebook and orkut launched on 22nd jan 2004.

Suman Paul: good info then u must have known that facemash was initially only for harvard university students and officially it was launched on feb 2004,,, actually he didn’t know how to create a centralized website untill jan 2004, soon after orkut was launched

Bibhas: Tell SUMAN, that they of course knew how to create a centralized website. FaceMash was a college project. They perfected it into Facebook.

Aritra Sen: and speaking about UI do we get this b-e-a-utifull dropdown comment section in that New orkut which tried to copy facebook but forgot to copy the like button thingy? :-p

Nikhil Wad: I have used Orkut before but as my most of contacts use Facebook, am on FB now. Orkut I feel is used by max students also but on FB I feel its social and business networking too. My side FB gets +1

Bibhas: Actually FB is more Pro than Orkut. if I were to compare, I’d do FB to a Community hall and Orkut to a Open Street. And Not To Forget, Twitter is more like a Classroom.. :)

Jayeeta Sil:for me orkut +1………photo album privacy much better….. most of da time it fails….sum weird thng…it fails to work….i hv myself seen pics frm albums who claim to hv kept under locked settings…it dsn’t happen wid orkut….

Aritra: opsiii in facebook you can do friend specific updates and i hope u know the recent facebook privacy policy and activated that.
for me orkut also +1 for photo sharing as i say orkut is just a photo sharing album for me nothing else to do there :-P

Aritra: Btw its not about facebook vs orkut (in that case facebook will anyday n always) its about is it true- facebook came later after getting the idea from orkut? and whose UI is better?

Nishant Vora: UI is always supposed to be judged by the simplicity and elegancy of it. That’s why MySpace fails at times, because of all that bloated HTML on user’s profile. Orkut maybe better at ‘looks’ with all those themes. Facebook has better features. Right now, if I favorite a video on Youtube, Digg a page, add something to delicious, update my blog, …upload new photos to flickr/photobucket, rate something on my last.fm, start using a new application on my PC (tracked via Wakoopa), and several other instances… All this is automatically shown on my FB profile. Also, I update my Twitter from anywhere.. my PC, mobile web, txt and the updates go to FB. There’s an app on Orkut ‘twitkut’ but afaik it does not automatically update on its own. Nothing of that sort on Orkut. Orkut is simply.. 1 scrapbook. Fill ‘er up with absolutely no thread facility to keep different conversations separately grouped. All Orkut could do to improve is allow comments on status updates in the ‘new Orkut’. That still sucks, if you compare it to Facebook.

Nishant: But then again it goes down to how you use them. In my opinion, I do prefer the communities on Orkut better than FB, or maybe because I don’t even visit any groups here. Or if people do not wish to keep this complexity of threaded messages, they can stick to Orkut for an all-in-one scrapbook.
At this point, there are 3 reasons a person might rant about FB, like whoever you mention in your status:
1) Narrow mindedness. Refusing to migrate to something new. It takes time to adjust, but it will only work out for you if you actively take interest in it….

2) They’re ok with the simple features of Orkut as I said above.. Photos, 1 Scrapbook (to boast of that uber scrapcount which you can’t on FB), and Communities.
3) They’re dumb at everything Facebook has got to offer, they’re an average Internet user, with no need of collaboration or resource sharing, what is easily done via Twitter and FB now, and not really feasible on Orkut. And since they don’t get all this ‘complicated stuff’, they start to rant and complain at how it sucks and cloned and blah blah.

Suman:  hello to all, thats me whom aritra is referring to…
this all started when i said “ orkut ir better
anyways thanx for all of ur useful opinions…..everyone shared all pros & cons..but now u r diverting frm the topic..
now i would like to add a few things..
1 well as we all know that facebook was launched 13 days later than orkut,,but facebook was started on oct 13 2008 as facemash…then dont u think that orkut also must have taken some time to develope which i dont know, hence i’m considering at the launching date……
2 about the like button i didn’t like it though
3 how a college student is supposed to know about how to create a centralized website.. that too 7 years back…

Nishant: I don’t understand as to why you’re adamant on sticking to arguing over who copied whom (even though it’s pointless). Every service tries to implement some or the other trend from it’s rivals, to keep going. If it doesn’t, the users themselves will start complaining how a certain feature is available on one site, and not on the other. An example is…how Facebook copied tagging users in a post from Twitter. No one’s going to rant over it being copied, rather welcome it for raising the communication bar on Facebook by collaborating via posts with upto 6 friends in a status (tag limit).

Tamoghno Karmokar: I agree that orkut have better interace.but facebook have better support with 3rd party apps and specially mobile.so using facebook is much easier. Just think about it , i upload a picture using flickr2twitter service using my phone’s email client , it automatically appears on my friends twitter timeline and also appear on my facebook. Beat that orkut.

Aritra: @Tamoghno can you explain in what way Orkut has better interface?I know you are not a average Internet user and yes 3rd party apps like Tweetdeck/Hootsuite and we should not forgot about facebook’s notification support for everything (now even you can reply from email notifications)

Tamoghno: by better interface i mean easier to understand. i still need to make people understand the concept of “wall” insted of “scrap”. also more custimization option means its more confusing for average indian people. before customization , facebook looks somewhat blank and confusing to me.

Bibhas: According to the latest Source, The number of active FB user is more than 350 million, whereas Orkut has around 100 million users.. It seems to me that There are some reasons behind this, dont u think? or those extra 250million people are so Stupid that they cant understand User friendliness.. Sigh..

And also Twitter has only around 45 million users but the worldwide traffic in Twitter(14) faaaar more than Orkut(79).

My take on Politics

On January 11, 2010, in Denken, Experience, India, by Aritra Sen

I know this post going to be very contradictory and controversial one.I am writing at first that I do have respects who have thoughts against my view.Well I have not read any of the mighty books on Indian politics and don’t have any great knowledge about Indian political history but I do believe I have the rights to speak my heart out whatever I know and how this political things shaped out to me till now.

If you go through my Facebook or Orkut profile you will get to know I am not political and I do feel good that I am politically unbiased.I would love to stay politically unbiased in future.I have the voting rights for last five years.I have not given vote a single time.I never influenced others not to give votes but to me giving votes (specially in West Bengal) is like picking up a thief from a bunch thieves. All parties to me are same.I just don’t believe this voting system where you call a party a minority party with no reason.Let me clarify this thing with an example assume there are 4 parties called A B C and D where A and B is the main party and total vote is 10 vote.A got 4 vote and rest of the 3 party got 2 votes each. Now if any of the party from C or D switches(let C in this case) to A then A got the majority.Though D got same votes/same public support as C got,we call D as “minority party”.Is is not fair to me.may be in previous election the party C was with party B.They are switching party in this election just because they wants to have the test of ministry.May be it is the case that public gave them vote because of their earlier stand but you never know with this sort of parties they keep changing their sides. All the parties decisions are subjected to last-minute change. What I am trying to say that this so many parties ideology just I don’t like.I will may consider to give votes when there are only 2 or 3 parties all over the India  which is just a big unlikely thing to happen.

I stopped watching local Bengali TV channels here in West Bengals.Firstly they are biased to a political party or a full-time political channel.Secondly there are no news in those channels except political violation and political killings.Today I was watching a discussion here in a news channel.A politician said there that “My conscience is bigger than my party”.To me its right comment because one just can’t accept everything happening(may be a wrong doing) in party. One should have that freedom to go against what others thinking. But the leader of that party was there to bang him saying that this is not right.Which was truly a ridiculous thing to me.Speaking about the Maoists problem in West Bengal-we do know that Maoists stay in the underdeveloped area.If there is Maoist problem in your state it’s the failure of that state’s government.I am giving you a stat that jointly West Bengal Govt and Our Central Govt spending 25 lakhs(or more) per day to carry out the operation against Maoists and this operation is going on for five or six months. You can imagine how much money has been spent for this operation. If they would have spent this money for the development of that area or if they now spend this amount of money for development of that area like for building hospitals, schools, giving water supply facilities-this Maoist problem wont be there in that place.

Just making the point that-Thoughts in this post are only mine and I have not written this post to influence readers to change their thoughts and I do respect who have views against my views.

I’m Feeling Lucky

On December 30, 2009, in Aritra Sen, Experience, Life, by Aritra Sen

I think most of us aware of this phenomenon.when we leave the Google search box blank the press the I’m Feeling Lucky button then a decreasing  counter comes up.If you have not tried it try it now then come back to read my post.Actually it shows how many seconds we are away from the next year.

Yes it is 2009 review of my life. Its a year with with so many happenings.I think I am back to so many things.

Starting of the year was not good because dad was not fit.He was suffering with lumbar spondalysis  and that time he could hardly walk for 2 or 3 mints. He had gone through a operation in  December-08 but which was not successful. Then we decided to visit Chennai apollo hospital there he had gone through a successful operation and Thankfully he is fine now.But that Chennai visit was a great learning curve for me because there was only me and my mom was there.Mom was always with dad in hospital to take care of him and I had to do take all the other responsibilities. That was the first time I took a mighty family responsibility and which went well for me and my family.

Then I came to my college the forth and final year.I missed out lots of classes and also was lagging behind with the project work.Actually in forth i was hardly in college first was with dad in Kolkata and then in Chennai. As all to be Engineers do,some how I managed with the project works and last semister. After that I finally became a graduate in this year.

Oh I forgot, meanwhile In march 28th I opened a Twitter account. That Twitter was a total crap for me and I was freaking out Orkut. From August I started doing  Twitter seriously.Gradually I realized what a platform of sharing and source of knowledge is Twitter. Not only Twitter is a great source of news/knowledge for me and its also a source of Great friends.I really got some amazing friends in Twitter and I really mean it.This blog is the perfect is the perfect example; this blog is a product of the helps I got from my Twitter friends. Yes I don’t want to mention names, just which I don’t feel good and also don’t like mentioning names. I think they are reading this post now. These friends are one of the best thing happened to me in 2009.I hope in future they will be in touch with me.

Speaking about the Good, Old friends they are with me and will be with me. Distance with few friends is getting big but I still remember their contributions. Yes it is the case that I wanted the distance back in last year. These small things helped me a lot. For my happiness now I only depends upon few close persons and who are with me.

2009 is the year of getting good friends, getting into Twitter and Blogging, becoming more independent, happy, matured, getting back into old Aritra, enjoying life at its pick and also waiting because I am waiting for my joining probably which I would get soon in next year.

Wishing you all that 2010 would be a flourishing year for you all….Happy New Year.

Thanks.

Voyage

On December 7, 2009, in Aritra Sen, Experience, Life, by Aritra Sen

After long time here I am writing about me. Today I will write about my college life. If I ask you which life you have enjoyed (or you are enjoying) at most school or life what would be your answer? I know it’s a tricky one and the result would be an even steven one.

But for me school is the winner with so many reasons behind it. Well my college life was a strange one. In one way I can say it was my biggest learning curve so far and in other way I can say it was a very dull period of my life. I was the same guy from first year to third year. In first year I was having mighty home-sickness. From fourth year onwards I have started to change in a big way. Mainly I have enjoyed my last year because I took a decision at the end of third year, which was not an easy one for me. In first three years I hardly made a good friend as I have seldom talked with anyone except my mess mates. Actually they also found me strange enough. In my college few know me because our team won the robbo soccer championship in college fest. They took me as a self-centered guy who hardly takes any side. That time I used to miss my school friends to share my problems. Yes I was weak that time but not weak enough to effect my carrier or others peace. Actually it was that sort of situation when you are in a hole and you cannot come up neither you can go deep. That time I was reluctant to make new friends and share my problems. I used to fight with myself .But trust me or not I still love those day, I learnt a lot from those days. I am what I am only because of that period.

At last at the end of third year I got the strength to come out. From fourth year onwards I am that school boy-Aritra who was always cheerful, who may not have the greatest sense of humor but with not a bad one, who loves to spend time with friends.

Now I am enjoying life at its peak but we tend to miss that pain which made you strong.

Thanks.

A dreadful experience

On November 7, 2009, in Experience, India, Life, by Aritra Sen

In Last few days I was reading ‘2 states’ by Chetan Bhagat. In that book you will get a detail description about the culture and people of Chennai city. When I was going through that book my terrible experience of Chennai was flashing out. In January this year I was in Chennai with my family for my dad’s spine surgery. My dad was admitted in the Apollo hospital and my mom was with him. I was going to Apollo hospital from Chennai central in a ‘BUS’. That time I have gone into the bus by front door. I was standing in the middle of the bus then the bus conductor came to me and asked me something in Tamil. As usual I could not figure out what he was saying, first I have told him in English then in Hindi that I don’t know Tamil as I am not from this state and I want to go Apollo hospital, what is the bus fare?  But he also cloud not figure out what I was trying to say.

That time I was expecting the same thing what we experience in West Bengal that you can give the fare when the conductor comes to you or you can go to him and give the fare later. After few minutes bus stopped at a stoppage and a cop came to me. He said something in Tamil and signaled me come out of the bus. For five minutes or so he was saying something to me which I could not figure out .In the mean time the bus went away from that place. As that cop was having communication problem with me another cop came to me who could speak in English. He explained me what has happened. According to him I have done a crime and I have to give Rs 500 fine or I have to spend a whole day in jail. The crime is that “in Chennai you have to enter the bus from the back door and while entering you have to give the fare to conductor who is seating right next to the back door”-according to the cop. I have explained him the whole matter that I was about to give the fair and I was having communication problem with the conductor as I am not from this state. I have also told him that I do not know this rule so how could you impose the rule on to me?  I had a argue with him for next 10 minutes but he did not agree with me. So I had to give him the fine. This is one mighty dreadful experience of my life because of the communication problem. I think most of us have faced this communication problem when they were in South India.

Thanks.
